How To Approach an Ultra or Ironman

Jordan Rapp quote sums it up!

This Jordan Rapp quote sums it up.
"It's about the process. It doesn't matter what you do tomorrow and it doesn't matter what you did yesterday. It's about today, and making today count. That's especially true in training, but it's the same mentality that I carry into racing. Focus on the task at hand, not on the finish line, or the next part of the race, but what it is that is right there in front of you in the moment."

Don't You Love A Happy Ending?

OK, not the longest week of my life, but close. I decided, on January 3rd, to be tough (but fair) on myself, and only buy a case of beer after each 5 lbs. lost. I started at a bloated 175lbs and had to get under 170 to taste the golden nectar again.
My Amphipod Belt had begun to slip last year, so I duct taped the sliding parts. I grew so chubby in my off season I couldn't get it done up anymore, so I had to go with the hand held. Not Good.
So it's back to the "Primal Challenge" and I am sticking to it. Of course Curling got in the way on Tuesday(2 beers) and Thursday(2 beers), but I worked extra hard sweeping so I will call that a wash. The rest of the week was high fat, medium protein, low carb. So,
Monday Jan 3rd- 175lbs
Tues Jan 4th-173.6 lbs
Sun Jan 9th 170.4 lbs
OK, so I had a dilemma. I'm 170.4 lbs. on Sunday afternoon. I KNOW if I hit the whirlpool for an hour or so I could get under 170 and enjoy lots of beer that night. But really, who was I kidding. I wasn't being honest with the only person who cares, me. (Sniff, wipe tear from eye).So I had a glass of wine instead and went to bed.
This morning I woke up and it was -11˚C. Not a good day for a run.The car doors were frozen shut. So I resigned myself to running on the treadmill, but miracle of miracles, I put my run off for so long (1:00pm), it got positively warm out, a blistering -3˚C! I purposely overdressed, hoping to sweat out the extra 0.4 lbs.

I went with the Inov-8 Debris Socks and the Khatoola Spikes due to all the snow and ice. Sorry Captain!

So I did a very relaxed first loop in around 50 minutes. Lots to see.

Stoopid Bridge, I cracked my head on it again, I still stand up too fast after going under it.The not so funny thing is, if you knock yourself out, you're likely going to roll into the Don River and drown.
Where was I? Oh yea. So I got back to the Schrek-mobile after my first lap and was sweating like crazy.I lost the gloves, scarf thing and toque.
Schrek-Mobile
Now I'm gonna go off on a tangent. I have always been impressed by the quads on some of the ultra runners I see in magazines, like Geoff Roes. So I decided to work on my quads. Become "Quadzilla". "Major Quad of the 82nd Airborne". "The Quad-Miester". "Mr. Quads"."The Quadinator". "Quad Guy".
  So I did a killer quad workout on  Saturday. Squatted 150lbs, 3 sets of 5, then did progressive leg extensions, 3X15 @ 90, 100 & 110lbs.
Soooo,
I go to run 2 hours on Sunday, Not Good. I felt like electricity was shooting through my thighs, and had to quit after an hour. Doh.That set up today, and I just took my time and it was B.E.A.U. tiful.

Mountain bikes? Seiously? It's winter!
Where was I? Oh yea. Dora got to do a "Quad Off" with Leslie and Dean at Trans Rockies. Pretty cool. He's a pretty good sport, considering both chicks beat him. By the way, Dora is also primal!
Watch your head. Doh.

We call this section "The Sumachs".  Beaver and I once saw a ,well, a Beaver, in here. Or was it a deer? I just remember we saw something.
Oh yea, today, after being a tad tentitive on the first loop, I dropped the hammer for the 2nd loop. I really wanted the brewskies tonight, so I was not drinking any water and was not intending to, unless I cramped up.

Do you know what's weird? As you run along the trail, ice builds up under your shoes. You really don't notice it until you hit something like, say wood. It would be funny, but then again, you could die here.
I SMOKED the 2nd loop and got home feeling a little anxious. I had to be sure I was under 170lbs, so I did a couple of chores while still wearing my smelly running clothes (chopped some wood, shoveled driveway, picked up groceries) before stepping on the scale.

Hey, some idiot ran over this dangerous platform. Looks like he was wearing Khatoolas.

The Khatoolas start to ice up.Yak Traks are for Mailmen and Old people.
It's A Beautiful Day
So, I just have one thing to say. Haleluja! After 7 days , I have lost over 5lbs, I actually weighed in at exactly 169lbs after chores.
Me with my case of "Old Mill" My hair is still sweaty, because when I weiged myself, I went to the Beer Store before my shower.
I really, really owe it all to this guy
I  had a decision to make this year, do I want to just run, or do I want to kick some ass. Answer is.......................kick some ass.

A Bit Of Snow. Three and a half Months To go until the pool is open!
This is called "Art". Even Portage liked it, and she's practically a professiomal photographer. You don't want to be wearing the iPod taking this shot, as the trains run quite regularly.
The whole weight loss thing is a matter of pride. I know I could lose 10-15  lbs. by not eating and sweating in a sauna. You see this in wrestling, MMA and boxing. GSP weighed in at 170 lbs for his fight against Josh Kostiuk, and 4 hours later was 187 lbs. Tim Ferriss has a plan to lose 30lbs in a day. I could do this, but I really want to lose fat, not muscle or water.
Next post-165 lbs.
 Digger out,
I hope I will be will be posting about  buying another case next Monday!

  2. Tried to get a pounder of Old Mil last night to sneak into the Hood to Coast movie. They didn't have any left, so I went with PBR.

So how did you get those quads? I hope you don't mind me using your photo, I'm guessing Dora took it?
