I'm an idiot. I lost my sweet waterproof camera while running in the ravine, it fell out of the velcro sack I keep it in and I didn't notice. I have a case with a zipper , and I should have been using it.Ran the course the next day to try and find it, but it's gone,baby,gone.Doh.
OK-the camera I'm using now weighs .04 lbs. as you can see. I knew I was getting leaner, just wasn't sure how much. When I weigh myself, it's gonna be naked and I am subtracting the weight of the camera.Stoopid flash.
I decided to lose 10 lbs for Ironman Canada, it makes the hills on the bike much easier.I've known for a while I would get down to 150 lbs., but not too soon. It's so easy! I am currently 152 lbs.,still 5 weeks to go.
You know, it's absolutely ridiculous that there is an obesity epidemic in the USA (less so in Canada), and every year all you hear is "eat low fat" or "go vegetarian", "eat whole grains", blah, blah, blah.
Can you imagine our primal ancestors eating grain? Not likely. Would you graze? Nature wants the seeds to survive, so they are sorta indigestible unless ground up or sprouted. Even after that they still contain toxins. For me, no pasta, no rice, no bread, no potatoes. Bam. End of story.
I've lost six pounds since I last weighed myself, eating a diet consisting of bacon, pork, eggs, steak, ribs, fish, fresh veggies, cheese, full fat yogurt and cottage cheese. My diet is around 60% fat,30% protein and10% complex carbs (raw veggies) .My only cheating is a few beers at night.
Six tall boys being "a few".It will be two years this fall, and the best part is, I'm not having any trouble with hunger or sticking to my diet.
Podium Shoes
Swiss showed up at a race one day in some absolutely primo deck shoes and I knew I had to get a a pair, Here they are. I know when Captain sees them he is going to be insanely jealous. Last pair Capper, sorry, no extra large sizes available. These are to be worn only after a race in which you earn a spot on the podium.
On an extremely cool note,we have a huge Pylon turnout shaping up for OHIO in November. When we were there last month, we noticed that people in Ohio HATE people from Michigan, which will be fun. I will be wearing my Michigan shirt and Michigan hat for the run.
GO BLUE!
Good luck to Beaver at Ironman Lake Placid tomorrow!
An ultrarunner tries to survive on a high fat, low carb, high beer diet. A member of the traveling horror show known as the Fat Ass Pylons. We go places and do stuff!

How To Approach an Ultra or Ironman
Jordan Rapp quote sums it up!
This Jordan Rapp quote sums it up.
"It's about the process. It doesn't matter what you do tomorrow and it doesn't matter what you did yesterday. It's about today, and making today count. That's especially true in training, but it's the same mentality that I carry into racing. Focus on the task at hand, not on the finish line, or the next part of the race, but what it is that is right there in front of you in the moment."

How has your running been affected since you went paleo? Better or worse? What do you eat at aid stations during ultras?
ReplyDeleteMichigan sucks. Then again, so does Ohio State.
Hi Brownie;
ReplyDeleteMy running has improved immensely since I went paleo, I would say mostly because of the weight loss, not due to the metabolic changes that happened. Now,I eat paleo, but I take in more carbs than your average paleo dieter. The day before a big workout or an ultra I will eat carbs ,usually that means more veggies, maybe even a sweet potato, and beer.Usually,if we are on the road, the veggies are french fries.
I never eat before an ultra, but after 90 minutes I start taking 1 gel every half-hour.I trust that is the rate I burn them off, so I try to stick with that.
I use Vespa,

an amino acid, and that is more or less following the instructions they give. It works great for me. I haven't had a cheeseburger yet, but the longest I've run in one day is 50K. Next year, I hope to get a 50 miler, then 100 miler under my belt, so I think that will call for some solid food.
I know Michigan sucks, the last time we were in Ann Arbor for "Dances With Dirt",we picked up a whole bunch of stuff, they were practically giving it away at a store called "Steve and Barry's".They have certainly not been doing very well lately!
How carby do you go as far as veggies on a day to day basis? Do you eat peas and carrots? And do you have anything in particular before training runs? Also wondered if you eat nuts and nut butters.
